8 Portfolio Projects You Can Build This Weekend With Free APIs

To-do apps and calculators tell a recruiter you finished a tutorial. Real data tells them you can build products. Every project below uses only free APIs from this directory — most need no key at all.

1. Weather, but beautiful

Open-Meteo + its geocoder: search any city, show a 7-day forecast with animated icons. Deploy it; send the link, not a screenshot.

2. Movie-night decider

TVMaze (keyless) or TMDB: two random well-rated shows enter, one leaves. Add posters and ratings — it looks like a real product because it is one.

3. Crypto paper-trading game

CoinPaprika prices + localStorage portfolio: give friends fake $10,000 and a leaderboard. Games get shared; shared projects get interviews.

4. The country explorer

REST Countries: flags, currencies, borders, maps — plus a quiz mode ("which country has this flag?").

5. Recipe roulette

TheMealDB: type the three ingredients in your fridge, get dinner. Real utility, real data, real photos.

6. Pokédex with search

PokeAPI is a rite of passage — do it properly: search, types, evolution chains, skeleton loaders.

7. "Is it down?" for the ISS

Open Notify + a map: show the space station's live position and when it passes over your city.

8. A dashboard of everything

Earthquakes (USGS), launches (Launch Library), headlines (Hacker News) — one page, three live feeds, pure "wow, real data".

Rule for all eight: deploy it live and link the repo. Our starter bundles group the APIs for each style of project.
